Recommendation on Fall Semester Meetings

Why is a recommendation needed?

The start of the new semester is a busy time for library staff and faculty, especially in the area of bibliographic instruction. This makes it difficult for some people to attend open meetings during that time. The purpose of the recommendation is to ensure that as many people in the libraries who wish to attend an open meeting can do so.

The recommendation

Whenever possible, avoid scheduling unessential meetings during the first weeks of the Fall semester. This does not include closed meetings with a defined group of attendees such as committee or department meetings. It does include open forums, presentations, training sessions, etc. that are open to a significant portion of the Libraries' employees.

Qualifications

This recommendation is not to be construed as an absolute embargo on open meetings during first part of the Fall semester. Common sense and consideration should be the guide. There may be open meetings that can only be held during this time frame, examples would include the availability of a speaker or when a web class is scheduled.

In scheduling any open meeting, whether during the first part of the Fall semester or not, it is recommended that one check the Library calendar (available from the UL@ND home page) to minimize conflicts with other meetings.

To make sure the Library Calendar is up to date, all Library employees are strongly encouraged to add all committee and department meetings and meetings open to library employees to the Library Calendar. A link to instructions is on the UL@ND main page.
