SAC's November Meeting Minutes
At this months SAC meeting we had two guest speakers. First, Doug Marsh
- Office of the University Architect and Sarah Misner, Employment, Human
Resources
Doug Marsh spoke to us about the campus plan.
Most of you know about the new science building going up across the
street, this project will be completed in 2006. The Gugielmino Athletic
Center which is being built behind the Rolf will be completed early
2005.
January '05 - Dec. '05 they will start to clean the ND woods to get
ready for the road expansions. Jan. '06- Dec. '06 Juniper will close.
ND must have new roads in place before they close Juniper or change
Edison Rd. (Juniper has over 6,000 pedestrians crossing a day).
2007 take away old Juniper Rd.
They will cut off Bulla Rd. to eliminate neighborhood traffic, in other
words we will not be able to access Bulla Rd. to use as a through way
to get to Ironwood. The excess traffic makes the neighborhood with it's
narrow streets unsafe for the people who live there.
The soccer fields across the street on Edison will no longer have the
soccer leagues playing there. Those fields will then become the main
construction site so there will be not be 2005 football parking. That
parking will be moved to the White Field and other pockets on campus.
When it reopens it will allow 1000- 1200 parking spaces, now it holds
approx. 1500.
After commencement the new student health and counseling center will
begin construction, in the interim the health center will move to the
security building and the counseling center will move the post office.
When it is completed a drug and alcohol center will have been added.
Two new residence halls will be built north of the library.(within
the 10 yr. plan)
There will be renovation of the current residence halls (when the donation's
are complete) those will take a year so the students will have to move
out during that period, so the new halls will have to be built first
The funding for a Indoor golf practice facility has been raised so construction
will begin soon.
Spring of 2005 will bring a Orthopedic Engineering Research Bldg. This
project will be funded by the government. Warsaw, In. is the "orthopedic
capitol" so that will be a big plus for that industry.
There are future plans for a hotel over by the old golf course but
that is more for the 10 year plan.
And of course our favorite subject ....parking. We have all probably
heard talk of the possibility of a parking garage, well I doubt that
will happen. The current cost for the parking lot like the one we have
now is $8000.00 per space per year. That includes the paving, maintenance,
lighting and etc. The cost for a parking garage space is $18,000.00
per year. So I guess that is not an option of our parking dilemma.
Currently being built in White Field is the building for the new generators.
Our current generators are WW II submarine engines that Father Joyce
was able to purchase. The University makes 30-40 % of it's own electricity
and we purchase the rest. For an example, when it is July and it is 100
degrees the University needs to purchase more electricity when it is
at peak price, if we can produce more power ourselves it will save us
money by not having to purchase the power when it is needed.
If you are interested in more information about the future of the campus
you can go the ND home page, click on the A-Z link at the bottom and
go to "U" , click on University Architect and at the top of
their page is a tab "campus plan".
Sarah Misner came to offer hiring and transfer information.
The process that is supposed to be followed for the posting of an open
position is as follows.
The open job is identified, review of the PD/revise if needed. Submit
to Compensation Dept. at HR.
Submit a Position Funding Verification form (where funding is coming
from that position) must have before posting begins
It is then taken to the Employment office at HR.
Contact with the hiring manager to discuss and write posting, then it
is ready for web page posting
It is asked by HR to be hung up within the department first.
Minimum of 5 days for campus employees (sometimes there are simultaneously
posted with the public posting if the hiring manager feels they will
not receive enough candidates for the hiring pool.
They close out the posting when the hiring manager feels they have enough
candidates.
If the application or resume is submitted through HR they will screen
to see if the requirements for the position have been met before sending
it on to the hiring manager.
HR may review a possible candidates file to relay any information that
may be helpful to the hiring process.
Candidates are kept informed or at least they try to as to where they
are in the hiring process. If you have submitted a resume for a position
and you have not heard anything you can call Sarah Misner or anyone
that works in the Employment office to check on the progress of that
posting. If you feel you were qualified for that position and were not
considered they ask that you please let them know.
When the decision has been made then plans are made for orientation
of the new hire to their new position.
HR is working towards a more fair process, obviously it will never be
flawless but I think it nice to see that they are trying to make it
as fair as possible and they are encouraging the hiring managers to
look at internal candidates first before going outside the campus.
This meeting was an informative one and I hope I have shared it with
all of you as clearly as possible.
If you have any questions I will do my best to answer it.
Thank you,
Joy
