SAC May 2007 Meeting Minutes

The May SAC meeting was yesterday and our guest were Denise Murphy (HR) Phil Johnson, Jeff Koros (NDSP).

Denise Murphy talked briefly about a updated and easier to understand FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) policy. I don't have any details other than the information will be "rolled out" to employees on June 18th and become effective July 1st.

Phil Johnson answered questions and offered information about NDSP.

A question was raised about the need for a traffic light at the intersection of Edison and Leahy drive. Phil indicated that the city of South Bend has jurisdiction over this and will need to make a determination based on need.

Question about the shuttle buses from parking lots- the need for more buses going to different locations on campus. Phil stated that he would follow up with Dan Skendzel who is responsible for the shuttle bus.

I expressed concern about the speed of traffic, especially the buses when entering and exiting the library circle. Phil will make an extra effort to patrol this area. Facilities is repainting the lines, including parking lots, streets and cross walks. We should see a repainting of the cross walk on the south side of the B parking lot, which is in the path of buses and cars entering and leaving the circle. I also had a question about where the handicapped spaces will be moved to once construction starts on the circle. I asked Dough Marsh (ND architect), his response:

The people using these spaces will be temporarily directed to those in the B lot during the construction period.

Some interesting facts:

Students who park in the library lot at night (with or without hang tag), but do not move during the day, will be ticketed. If they leave their cars there for four days they will be towed.

If someone is parked illegally, they should receive a ticket every day for four days. Then they will be towed.

Parking tickets range from $5.00 -$50.00 depending on the infraction. The first parking ticket for each person each year is simply a warning. If staff, faculty and students pay their tickets with in the first 10 days, there is a 20% discount.

There is not a time limit on handicapped parking spots for cars with handicapped decals.

The NDSP wants you to call about infractions in parking, speeding or other matters of safety. (1-5555) or by email from the NDSP home page. They do not mind getting these calls because they can not be every where
at once, so they need our help.

Next meeting is June 14th. Please email or call me about questions or concerns for the next meeting.
