SAC February 2006 Meeting
First I would like to apologize that I haven't been sending out my normal e-mail. I am settled in my new position in the Chemistry Physics Library, and my computer has been set up with all of my information so you will now be receiving regular updates.
I will start with the most current SAC news.
At February's meeting we welcomed our newly elected members from the even numbered districts. We have quite a few new people, and it is really nice to see some of the districts that have been unrepresented finally have someone to speak for them.
Our web page has been updated so that it is easier to find, and all of the information is up to date. http://www.nd.edu/~staffcou/
As we all know there has been a lot road construction here on campus. Bob Marsh the architect for ND will be at our next meeting to explain some of the upcoming changes that we can expect to see.
As most of you know already there will be a change in our vacation system. First I am going to say that I do not know all of the details , but we will all be receiving a letter around the 17th of February that will help explain the new system. There will also chances to have group meetings to help answer questions. Most importantly we will not be loosing the vacation time that we have already received at the beginning of 2006. As of July 1st you will begin accrue a certain amount of hours ( depending on length of service) every pay period. Once you have reached the limit of possible accrued time you can accrue one week over that amount of time, and then you will stop accruing time until you use some of your vacation time. ( example: I received 80 hrs of vacation time in January- July 1st I will begin to accrue 5.00 hrs.per pay period, once I hit the maximum amount of time that I can accrue I will be able to accrue only 40 more hours(1 week) of time before I can no longer accrue any more - until I use some vacation time then I can start to accrue time again. .It is similar to how the sick time bank works- you can only accrue so many hours of sick time and once you hit that limit you can no longer accrue any more until some is used. This new system will eliminate the "use it or lose it " situation that we have now with our vacation time. I will be placing a diagram that we were given in our meeting that I think helps explain it how the program will work ( I will send one out to the branches).
July 1st also brings a change in the way the paycheck stubs will look. One of those changes will be that our sick and vacation time will no longer be on the bottom of our paychecks. The information will be available online at your Self Service page located on the HR web page. For those who do not have access to computers , you will be able to receive a report from you supervisor. They are looking into other options for access to this information, possibly phone access but as of right now they are not sure what another might be. New Employees will be able to accrue vacation time when they start their employment but will not be able to use it until 90 days after date of hire.
At December's meeting we were given a presentation of the new online employment site. The site has a lot of new features that make it very user friendly. You are able to set up your resume with a cover letter and save it and make changes when needed. You are able to check the status of the open position to see where they are in the hiring process, these are just a few of the new options. If you would like help in learning how to use this new system, training and information are available through the Recruiting and Employment office.
November we were visited by John Affleck Graves Executive VP, and Bob Mcquade who is the new Associate VP of HR.
John Affleck Graves shared information about the five attributes that Father Jenkins feels Notre Dame employees should have: Integrity, Accountability, Teamwork, Leadership, and Service. He sees these as areas that all faculty and staff are expected to focus on.
Bob McQuade answered questions about how the hiring process works, how positions are filled and etc. Once these have been approved with the minutes I will pass them on to you.
I do believe that is about all I have to report to you at this time. My next meeting is Thursday March 9th. If you have any questions or concerns you may send me a email.
Thank you, and I would like to apologize again for the delay in getting you this information.
Joy
