ND Library Core Skills Training Program

Program Objectives

Many of us haven't grown up with computers. While we all know how to perform our specific jobs using computers and the internet, many of us don't "get the big picture". This program is designed to ensure that we all have an understanding of the core computer skills needed in a modern office environment. It addresses terms we need to know to communicate with one another, provides an overview of how computers and networks work, and introduces basic functions of the most commonly used application programs. The goal is to provide an understanding of the Information Technologies hardware, software, and systems we interact with on a daily basis, and an awareness of what software can do for us. This will enable us to work more efficiently, adapt to changes more easily, and achieve a greater comfort level with the technology we use today and will use tomorrow.

What are "core skills"

We wrestled with that question for months. It turns out we're not the first to have trouble defining them. That's actually a problem common to most organizations. Two international standards have been developed by groups with representatives from education, industry, and government. IC3, the Internet and Computing Core Certification program, was identified as the most appropriate standard of basic computer and internet literacy for us.  It includes three areas of knowledge:

To this standard, we have added core ND Library-specific skills. The Libraries will use a combination of these two elements as the “core skills” standard for all Library faculty and staff.

What is IC3?

Quoting Certiport: “The Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³) program is the world’s first validated, standards-based training and certification program for basic computing and internet knowledge and skills.  Successful completion of IC³ ensures you have the knowledge and skills required for basic use of computer hardware, software, networks, and the internet.”
