Minutes of the Mar. 16, 2007 TERMinators meeting

Present: Nastia, Marina, Ben, Hector, Eric, Mary, Tom

Eric joined us to help us discuss his request to create an "Audiences" facet in the DDW. We discussed issues such as

  • Should we classify resources by type of user they are appropriate for (undergrad, faculty), or by level of research (basic, advanced) they are most appropriate for?
  • Could we imagine the website incorporating an automated reference interview?
  • Creating different parts of the website appropriate for different levels of researcher (does quicksearch do this already?)
  • Have the software put a cookie on the user's computer indicating the level of research of the resource they used, then putting the resources at that level first in their next search
  • Classify resources by the class they are good for (many profs already have class pages)

Mary mentioned the Grainger Library at the University of Illinois, http://search.grainger.uiuc.edu/top/default.asp, which has users select information format as a starting point.

We decided to poll Reference and Collection Development to see if there is interest in categorizing resources by level of research for which they are most appropriate.

After Eric left, we reviewed the decisions we had made on the resources for Arts and Humanities (General), Science and Technology (General), and Social Sciences (General). We confirmed most of our choices, but had a couple of questions:
  • Mary will check the description in the DDW for the "Voice of the Shuttle"
  • Hector will check two resources (forgot to record which, please remind)

We decided to add WorldCat (FirstSearch), and to substitute New York times (Proquest historical newspapers) for Historical index to the New York times, 1851-1922

Tom will draft a ULON to NDLIBWWW and send it to TERMinators for comments.

At our next meeting we will continue with our discussion of the procedure (Chris's draft)
