Minutes of the May 1, 2006 TERMinators meeting

Present: N. Guimaraes, B. Heet, M. Lehman, T. Lehman, C. Poehlmann, K. Ryan-Zeugner, L. Sharp, M. Smyth.

The first order of business was finding replacements for Kathie and Linda who finished their terms in April. A list of available Reference personnel was put together. Tom will call in hopes of getting a couple of volunteers.

The meeting schedule was discussed based on everyone's availability. Tuesdays 1:30 to 3:00 was decided upon, at least through the summer months.

The goals of the committee were discussed:

  1. Review the contents of the subject pages with a view to removing inappropriate resources.
  2. Review the facets and terms assigned to the IDR (Institutional Digital Repository).
  3. Harmonize the IDR and DDW by assuring that facets and terms are used consistently across both.

Tom mentioned that "General and Multidisciplinary," "Arts and Humanities General," "Social Sciences General" and "Science and Technology General" do not meet the agreed upon definition of a DDW subject. Linda said the terms originated in the original "My Library" group. Linda and Kathie indicated the General and Multidisciplinary Indexes were used heavily by undergraduates. In many cases their topics were very general and not readily served by more subject specific materials. It was mentioned that MetaLib may help locate general and multidisciplinary materials.

What to look for in reviewing the content of subject pages was discussed. Are there some items that don't belong? What is meant by "Recommended Resources?" The term seems to mean different things in different subjects. In some cases it means "best;" in others it means the more general resources, with the more specialized items left for the bottom of the page.

New members will attend the next meeting scheduled for Mon., May 22nd.

Respectfully submitted,
Kathie Ryan-Zeugner
