Minutes of the April 19, 2006 TERMinators meeting

Present: Mark Dehmlow, Nastia Guimaraes, Ben Heet, Alan Krieger, Mary Lehman, Tom Lehman, Laurie McGowan, Chris Poehlmann, Kathy Ryan-Zeugner, Linda Sharp, Cheri Smith, Marina Smyth, Eric Morgan, Dan Marmion

The purpose of this meeting of current and past members of TERMinators was to evaluate our experience and decide on the future of the group. We began by looking at some questions Tom had put up on the chalk board and seeing if there were others we wanted to add. Some of the questions:

  • What have we learned in TERMinators?
  • Was the experience useful?
  • Should TERMinators continue?
  • If so, how?

Some of the ideas expressed In the discussion:

  • Cheri: A review of the content of the DDW subject pages would be helpful. The subject page 'Science and Technology (General)' has only one recommended resource, ECCO : Eighteenth Century Collections Online. She also wishes Dissertation Abstracts weren't listed on the Find Articles by Subject -- Psychology page. To get it removed would involve contacting the subject librarians for the 18 other subject pages on which DA appears. She'd rather be able to send a request to TERMinators to process.
  • Mark: The DDW is organic and grows and therefore needs oversight. An important aspect is the representation from different departments which brings different perspectives to the group
  • Alan: Are the DDW term assignment guidelines available? They are, but not well publicized. Marina suggested providing a link to the guidelines from the CEP form
  • Marina suggested finding a different label than "Recommended resources," possibly "Short list"
  • Marina noted that as a new member, there was a steep learning curve, but she now understands the DDW better and feels it has been worthwhile.
  • Linda: the continuity provided by the ongoing members is important
  • Eric: it is important that facets and terms used in the DDW and the IDR (Institutional Digital Repository) be consistent
  • Linda: being proactive requires new members
  • Alan: Exposure to membership on TERMinators should be spread out

Our consensus was that TERMinators filled a useful role and should continue. We decided to continue TERMinators for another 18 months (until Oct. 2007) and to keep rotating members every six months.
