Minutes of the Nov. 9, 2005 TERMinators meeting

Present: Ben Heet, Tom Lehman, Chris Poehlmann, Kathie Ryan-Zeugner, Mary Lehman, Marina Smyth

Tom began the meeting by reiterating the context for our task at hand. To classify non-information resources and to push them out to the campus portal. Prior to the meeting, Tom pulled together a consolidated list everyone's top ten resources. The agenda for the meeting was to go through the list and assign either the term Help or Services. Assigning the various resources to each term is meant to help us create definitions for the two terms.

There was a brief discussion as to what our term options were. Are we limited to the use of only Help or Services? These seemed to be the two obvious terms for the resources we were going through and the easiest to begin with as the 'low hanging fruit'.

We then began going through the list of resources and assigning terms. The following resources had the most discussion.

Ask-A-Librarian: We could not agree on whether this was Help or Service so we assigned it to both. We did however agree that the list of resources assigned to both terms should be kept short. We may come back to this resource once we finish the term definitions and see if one term fits better than the other.

Contact Us: We decided the name needed to be changed so that it would not cause confusion within the campus portal. The libraries won't be the only areas with a contact us option. For now we agreed this should be 'Contact the Libraries'.

Service Areas: The service areas are listed on a page that lists many other resources. What part of this page do we want to classify? We decided that the whole page should be sent out to the portal but the resource should be 'Library Services' and not 'Service Areas'.

Subject Librarians: This is a problematic resource because it has three different names; subject librarians, subject specialists, subject assignments. We felt subject librarians was the best name. We also might not list this as a separate resource. It could be incorporated into Contact the Libraries.

Course Reserves / E-Reserves: Is there a page that can pull both these together so we can list it as one resource? It is not clear that there is. We decided to list both Course Reserves and E-Reserves for now, and to change "E-Reserves" to "Electronic Course Reserves."

Connect from Home: This does not need to be listed separately since it is already part of the How do I page and the current proxy server requires no browser configuration.

We ran out of time a little more than half way through the list of resources. It was decided that we would meet every other week beginning with our next meeting the Wednesday after Thanksgiving.
