Minutes of the Oct. 5, 2005 TERMinators meeting

Present: Mark Dehmlow, Alan Krieger, Mary Lehman, Tom Lehman, Laurie McGowan, Kathie Ryan-Zeugner, Linda Sharp

Tom began the meeting by offering a series of tests which could be used to decide if a given "non-information" resource should be included in the DDW:

  1. Can we make a DDW page using it?
  2. Do we want to export the resource to another application?
  3. Would someone want to customize his/her page with the resource?
  4. Are there political issues? (For instance, what is appropriate for display to the user? Is its inclusion consistent with the mission of the library?)

The group agreed that there was "low hanging fruit", such as certain library services, which would be of obvious use for export to other applications or page customization; it was noted that in the future our "audience" could emerge as a facet when information about individuals' university status is made available.

Tom proposed that our next steps should address three questions:

  1. Is "Notre Dame Libraries" the right facet name?
  2. What terms should be in this facet?
  3. Should "library services" be its own facet?

The ensuing discussion made it clear that ultimately we will have to not only review the resources listed under the "Notre Dame Libraries" facet, but also those listed under the three boxes on the left side of the library webpage: "Getting Help," "Library Services," and "Inside ND Libraries." For next time, however, we will review the terms listed under the "Notre Dame Libraries" facet and try to reach a consensus on which should be retained and which can be eliminated; it was agreed that terms must be able to be used for more than one resource. On that basis, we hopefully can decide on the facet names which best organize the terms we want to keep.

Our next meeting will be October 12.

Respectfully submitted,
Alan Krieger
