Minutes of the Sept. 14, 2005 TERMinators meeting

Present: Tom Lehman, Kathie Ryan-Zeugner, Laurie McGowan, Alan Krieger, Anastasia Guimaraes, Linda Sharp, Eric Morgan, Mary Lehman

Eric joined our meeting to give us a big picture of the way items in the DDW can be syndicated throughout the University and how this affects our work in assigning facets and terms to library items not currently included in the DDW.

  • one of the goals is to make people aware of what the library has to offer; we've made available "things" the library provides (dictionaries, encyclopedias) but not services or other library information
  • by thoughtfully applying facets and terms to services, etc., and adding them to the DDW, we could then make them available for inclusion in a variety of compatible applications (campus portal, MyLibrary, WebCT, subject pages)

Eric said there are four parts to this process

  1. Deciding on nomenclature (what's going to be a facet? what becomes a term?)
  2. Outlining guidelines for and descriptions of facets/terms
  3. Data entry
  4. ?

The TERMinators will be the lead group for #1 and #2

As a result of the discussion, the committee more fully understood what it was being asked to do and will proceed by

  • looking at service-type items currently listed under the left side tabs of the library homepage and decide which warrant inclusion in the DDW
  • determining how we want to classify these items in terms of facets/terms; determining how broad or narrow a facet/term should be? deciding which groupings make the most sense
  • providing guidelines for assigning future facets and terms in these areas and providing descriptions of the ones we have assigned

Our next meeting is 10/5.

Respectfully submitted
Linda Sharp
