Minutes of the Aug. 19, 2005 TERMinators meeting

Present: Alan Krieger, Cody Jones, Mary Lehman, Tom Lehman, Laurie McGowan, Kathie Ryan-Zeugner, Linda Sharp

Today's meeting followed our summer recess. Cody's last day at the Libraries will be September 9. Nastia will replace him on the Committee after his departure. Best of luck to Cody in his doctoral studies!

The next rotation occurs in October. Several members will leave and several new members will be recruited. Evaluation of the Committee will occur in April, 2006. Evaluation results will inform decisions about the committee's future.

Tom asked us to consider Eric's presentation to the Committee about utilizing the ND Libraries facet for "non-information resources". Eric made the case that more could be done with the library web site if we use the facet for further classification of information objects related to library services, operations, history, etc. Classification is required to create channels into the campus portal, to feed into "My Library", etc.

The current ND Libraries facet definition is "Resources providing information about the University Libraries of Notre Dame and their services."

We viewed a list of terms. "About" contains approval plan documents. All agreed that this is not appropriate for that term. There was additional discussion regarding the term, "About". All agree that it is very broad and essentially duplicates the facet definition. We will move toward elimination of "About" as a term. Proper placement of the approval plan documents is another issue and will be discussed in a future meeting.

Alan questioned whether these types of resources are suitable for regular appearance on a computer-generated web page. For example, a patron may have a one time need to check library hours, but probably does not wish to have these displayed every time he/she consults a library page. There was additional discussion about how we shall proceed with this project. Will we review and define the current terms associated with the ND Libraries facet? How will we assign resources?

Discussion of the topic will continue at the next meeting. Alan will not be present next week.
