Minutes of the June 10, 2005 TERMinators meetingPresent: Cody Jones, Alan Krieger, Mary Lehman, Tom Lehman, Laurie McGowan, Kathie Ryan-Zeugner ; guest: Steve Hayes Tom announced he's cancelling next week's meeting due to his participation in the regional ASIS&T meeting "To Google or Not to Google" on campus. The Data Interest Group has not yet sent to TERMinators a revised definition for the revised term "Data, statistics, and survey results." Nonetheless, the term itself will be posted for comment to NDLIBWWW. Steve Hayes joined the meeting for further discussion of his newly requested term "Official publications." Steve addressed the group's questions/concerns: The term is appropriate for both the private sector and government. If a resource is an aggregation of both "official" and unofficial publications, it's approprate to assign the term "official." Nothing is to be inferred regarding a resource's status as being/containing "offical publications" if a collection manager does not assign the term. The term could be in either the "Formats" or "Research tools" facet. "Official publications" hold legal status; they are publications required by statute or internal by-laws. TERMinators agreed that the facet for the proposed term "Official publications" is to be "Formats." After we come up with a definition, Tom will give Steve an opportunity to review it. The proposal will move forward according to our process. The group resumed discussion of suggested changes to terms assigned to resources on the "Non-subject non-'Electronic books and texts' terms, excluding journals" list. We discussed at length the difficulties with the term "Bibliographies" in the electronic environment, compared to print counterparts of such resources. When such print resources become electronic, they mostly seem better described by the term "Indexes and abstracts." Results: The term "Dictionaries" will not be added to the entry for Grove Dictionary of Art (already has term "Encyclopedias"). For the resource Handbook of Latin American Studies we will add the term "Indexes and abstracts" and drop the term "Bibliographies." Next meeting in two weeks: Friday, June 24. --Mary Lehman |
