Minutes of the May 18, 2005 TERMinators meetingIn attendance: Mary Lehman, Tom Lehman, Cody Jones, Alan Krieger, Laurie McGowan, Mark Dehmlow, Kathy Ryan-Zeugner It may be useful to determine what the composition of the NDLIBWWW list to see who we are communicating with? Tom will check the list membership. We may also wish to send communication through the collection development list to make sure we are effectively communicating with selectors. The term "Multimedia" was sent out to NDLIBWWW, but no response, what do we do? We will compile initial list of "multimedia" resources and then we will send it out to the list. We can also look for items as we evaluate non-ejournal resources. We will also ask selectors to suggest resources that may be multimedia resources. A later issue will be to discuss the term "full-text" and what we mean by it. Scott VanJacob has suggested the term "survey tools". Tom will show Scott the Data Sets and Data Sheets (GIS, statistics, etc.) term and ask if it is adequate for the resource CIMA. The group thought that CIMA was not a tool, but rather a data set or poll result resource. One option might be to add the word "survey results" to the term Data Sets and Data Sheets (GIS, statistics, etc.), so that it is clear to patrons that it includes survey data. A later discussion item will be to consider Eric's request from last week. During our discussion about specific resources and the terms that are assigned to them, we talked about a handful of related issues. To appear in the University portal, a resource must have a subject term and a recommended non-subject term. We discussed assigning each resource at least one non-subject term as a standard practice. We talked a bit about how titles appear in the DDW and how they might be able to be changed. Someone interested in a title change would need to check with the resource selector and then request re-cataloging. We also talked about the application of particular terms. With the eBooks and eTexts term, we want to be sure the resource is acutally an eText, primarily because it is such a generic terms an could be applied to almost anything which leads to over-application. With other terms such as Dissertations, we may wish to apply the term to resources that are not actually Dissertations themselves, but are related to dissertation resources. For example: Dissertations Abstracts is not itself a resource filled with dissertations, yet the term Dissertations is a useful access point. Similarly, Biographical and Genealogy Master Index is not itself a Biography, but Biography is a useful access point term. Tom will follow up with a few selectors in regards to our suggest term changes for resources that they are responsible for. Tom will figure out who to talk with regarding Census CD to see if we can suggest a name change. Tom will talk with Steve Hayes about Comperio. Tom will talk with Carol Brach about CRC handbook. We will look at Thursday or Friday morning for a new meeting time, preferably 10 am or later, not earlier than 9 am. Below are our proposed changes to DDW resources, the rest will be emailed to the list by the members:
