Minutes of the November 17, 2004 TERMinators meeting
In attendance: Tom Lehman, Cheri Smith, Kathie Ryan-Zeugner, Laurie
McGowan, Linda Sharp, Mark Dehmlow, Mary Lehman, Nastia Guimaraes.
Term Definitions:
Tom presented three options for dealing with the term definitions people
have been submitting.
-
Discuss each term during committee meetings. This was dismissed
because it would be too time consuming.
- After the terms are submitted allow for a comment period. If no one
comments on a term the assumption will be that it is approved. This
approach was approved. Tom will send out the complete list of terms &
definitions after the next TERMinator meeting. Committee members will be
given two weeks to select definitions that they feel need to be looked at
by the whole committee. Mark suggested that we try to make a
differentiation between substantive changes to definitions, and "friendly"
changes (such as spelling/grammatical errors).
- Have one person edit for consistency. This may be utilized depending on
the amount of editing necessary.
Please submit all of your definitions before the next meeting. After that
the "comment period" will begin.
Movement of terms from Resource Type (which is being eliminated) to other
facets.
As it was decided to eliminate the Resource Type facet from the DDW, the
group began deciding where the terms currently in the Resource Type facet
would be moved. This was the status of the Resource Type facet at the end
of the meeting:
Collected works - moved to Genre
Constants, Formulae and tables - moved to Research Tools
Course Pages - possibly delete as there are no resources in this category
Forms - moved to Formats
Government Publications - moved to Research Tools
Lesson Plans - after lengthy discussion moved to Research Tools
Methods and techniques - possibly delete? There are no resources in this
category
Patents - moved to Research Tools
Properties - to be determined
Registry numbers - to be determined
Schedules - delete this term and move the South Shore schedule to travel.
Spectra - to be determined
Standards and codes - to be determined
Tests - to be determined
Treatises - to be determined
There was some concern that too many terms are going to fall into the
Research Tools facet. Some of this concern was alleviated knowing that not
every term will appear on every subject page. There is a possibility,
however, that some of our facet definitions may need to be revisited after
we've settled on the locations and definitions of all of the terms.
Respectfully submitted,
Cheri Smith
