Minutes of 10/20/04 TERMinators meeting

Present: Tom Lehman, Laurie McGowan, Alan Krieger, Cheri Smith, Mark Dehmlow, Linda Sharp, Mary Lehman

TL distributed updated versions of two handouts; one with the member-contributed suggestions for definitions of the facets, and one that was a facets, terms and definitions list.

We returned to our task of defining the facets. We began by trying to define "Genre". TL suggested broadening the definition and gave the Library of Congress list of genres as an example. Others felt some genres really were more formats and should be considered under that facet. In the end, it was decided to go with the dictionary definition of genre for the time being.

We next considered the definition for "Research Tools". This category seemed even more problematic as we discussed the label itself and whether this facet should be separate or absorbed by a few others. We decided to keep it for now and came up with three elements that should be included in its definition. Our definition should include the idea that Research Tools are resources used 1.) to find quick factual information 2.) to find general background information and 3.) to assist in finding material on a particular subject. Before our next meeting, we're to combine these three notions and formulate definitions for the facet "Research Tools". We're to send our suggestions to the TERMinators listserv so we can finalize a definition when we next meet.

We also articulated that the main purpose of defining the terms and facets was to give guidance to those who select resources for the DDW. It is felt that if we provide clear and consistent definitions the end result will be categories the end user will also find understandable.

TL suggested that at the end of our task, we should go back and revisit our decisions to make sure our choices are consistent and sensible.

We felt that the time being spent now defining the facets is time well spent. Besides guiding the DDW selectors, we think it will help guide us when we define the terms included in the facets. MD put it into perspective when he asked the question "Did Dewey build the DDCS in a day?"
